The forests of Papua are a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts. Trails of varying difficulty, from gentle walks to more adventurous treks, offer opportunities to observe an extraordinary diversity of species. Several Birds-of-Paradise can be found here, alongside cassowaries, hornbills, cockatoos, parrots, and many other endemic birds.
Beyond the birdlife, the forest is home to colorful butterflies, tree-dwelling cuscus, monitor lizards, flying foxes, and a fascinating variety of tropical wildlife. Whether you are an experienced birder or simply curious about nature, every walk offers the chance for memorable encounters.
The spotted common cuscus is one of the most distinctive arboreal marsupials of Papua. In the lush rainforests of Wandamai, within Wasior National Park, this nocturnal animal moves quietly through the forest canopy, feeding on leaves, fruits, and flowers. Its beautiful cream-colored fur marked with dark spots provides excellent camouflage among the trees. As an important part of Papua’s rich biodiversity, the spotted common cuscus helps maintain the balance of the rainforest ecosystem and represents the unique wildlife heritage of the region.
